Topic: make a bsd mag forum

make a bsd mag forum....

For example, Linux had at least two completely independent USB stacks before Linus Torvalds rejected them both and wrote a third one from scratch, after he found both existent Linux  stacks unsatisfactory.  (When pressed for an explanation as to why he selected the API he did, Torvalds stated: "because I wanted to."

Re: make a bsd mag forum

What for? What kinda things would you expect to be put there?

Re: make a bsd mag forum

1. I have an idea for the mag, where do I post this message?
2. Someone wants to give feedback for the mag, where do they post this message?
3. Someone has a question about the mag, where do they post that message?
4. Someone wants to know whats coming up in the next mag or whats the current status of the mag or whats going on, where do they find out about this?

shall I continue

Cool - what is it?  Post it here and let us discuss it big_smile

Thinking ahead, a thread could be setup for the mag. However, each entry WOULD come to EOL and be closed, as it either enters the mag (ending the need for the entry) or it is rejected.

True!  But I do wonder if people still visit/use the wiki.   Has it died?

how is a wiki fit for these needs?

Re: make a bsd mag forum

Scuzzo, contribute to BSDnews if you want to do a mag - they have enough problems gathering stuff together, and they are the defacto BSD rag...

Re: make a bsd mag forum

We are planning to release a BSDNexus magazine.

Re: make a bsd mag forum

really?  that is cool - if you need a perl article, let me know...:)

That'd be great - you could even have a regular column if you'd like! A sample layout of the mag can be found here:
http://www.bsdnexus.com/tmp/Design.pdf      (approx 1MB in size)

I think it kinda has hmm.  estrabd (perlfan in #bsd) added a few things to it earlier today.  I kept checking it after I added a few comments and not much of anything happened after that.  visit the Wiki people!

Scuzzo: maybe you're right about a Wiki being the wrong place to discuss stuff.  and maybe a forum to discuss mag ideas is a good idea!

Very nice! - did you do the artwork yourself?  I'll get things together soon.  andre said there it would be 'published' when you guys got eough articles, but is there some sort time line in mind?

Re: make a bsd mag forum

The first digital issue is roughly aimed for 1st June - but at present rate of article submissions - we wont make it sad

No, I didn't do the artwork - it's all OpenBSD's tongue   However, I did do the layout, using scribus

Well, I will definitely get you something on MPICH by mid-May.

Re: make a bsd mag forum

June 1st is NOT too soon. I could write at least 3 articles in that time...and I have 2 jobs....ohh maybe I better keep quiet....:)

You're right, it's NOT too soon - but at the current rate of submissions/article titles/regular columns/revues/etc... etc.... etc.... we're not going to make it.

So..... 3 articles from DaGr8Gatzby ......   ok, that's now penciled in!  Just supply the titles and I can start to piece together the contents list of issue 1

Re: make a bsd mag forum

"Creating a Parallel Computing Environment Under FreeBSD Using MPICH"

Note - this is not a cluster or beowulf how-to.  It will cover how to set up MPICH on FreeBSD (could apply to most *nix, actually) and how to run some benchmarks and a parallel finite difference code I wrote.

Re: make a bsd mag forum

I might have an idiot's guide to pf.  I'm playing with it now, it's unfinished.  The idea is for it to be an introduction to the three detailed guides of which I know.

If anyone wants to look at it and point out any glaring errors, at present, it's at http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/pf.html

Actually, I was thinking of the RTFM section, but Wintellect, take a look and see if it looks like it might work for you.
Remember, it's unfinished at present.

<@andre> i would be so much more efficient if i wasn't so stupid

Re: make a bsd mag forum

Here are some articles I wrote a while back which can be used:

http://www.brettsbsd.net/articles.php

Also, I did an "8 steps to java in freebsd 4.x" a while back that has actually been mentioned a few times on some lists, so I'd be happy to contribute that as well.

Re: make a bsd mag forum

Wintellect, I finished my pf article, so please take a look and let me know if it's of any value to you.  (It's at the link given in my last post)

Re: make a bsd mag forum

I like it - we can certainly use that in the mag. I'll set up a sample Mag page today/tomorrow with that article wink

perlfan - cool dude!

Remeber everyone - We ALSO need reviews, discussions - what your experiences are with BSD; especially in the workplace.   We don't want the mad to be purely Howtos.   We want it to be informative.

Re: make a bsd mag forum

As promised, scottro, the updated version is here : http://www.bsdnexus.com/tmp/Design.pdf (1.3MB)

I modified your howto slightly in its wording at points to make it sound more magazine-like - hope that's ok
