Topic: VideoSeven R19W01 widescreen

I am trying to configure my xorg.conf to use my VideoSeven R19W01 widescreen flatscreen appropriately.

I've found the manufacturer specifications here:

from this I can see that the top resolution is 1440*900 @ 60Hz and the refresh is 30 - 82 KHz / 56 - 76 Hz.

I'm going to try using these specifications in the configuration file, but I wondered if anyone had any experience or advice?

I read the section in the handbook on adding a flatscreen, but it isn't very clear as -
a ) it talks about how it may be done in the future
b ) my /var/log/Xorg.0.log has no entries for MGA

Also, just noted that the techspecs for the monitor available from the site only give upper and lower value for the vertical and horizontal refesh.

Okay - update on this, I ran gtf and got my modelines and added this into the relevant entry in xorg. However, when I went in and tried to select my 1440*900 widescreen layout in KDE, I found that this entry wasn't there, instead it offered 1440*1024 (I believe).

Obviously, knowing that this was out of range I left this alone, so I opted to change my screen resolution to the next largest (can't remember this currently). This caused the KDE session to lock up. CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE failed to get me out, and trying to get a new login session with a CTRL+ALT+Fn failed also...

As a personal rule of thumb, with modern hardwares, I leave these refresh/sync rate figures to autodetection.
=> relying on the device's EDID.

Are you saying that I should use the output of EDID? If so, how do I go about this?

Ah. My guess is that your problems are caused by the vega driver, which has many limitations. Why don't you use the radeon driver instead?

No, it's part of x.org. The original configuration that you provided above my previous post even used it. All you really need to do is changing "vesa" to "radeon".

Okay - changing the vesa entry to Radeon didn't work - the x server won't start up. I'll post up my xorg log.

No, the card is autodetected. I'm not sure When the BusID option is required, I'm guessing it's needed when there's more than one gfx card.

I commented out that line and I tried using "radeon" then "ati" both failed.

It is (definitely) a Powercolor ATI X1300 clone. I've had it work on Linux previously. I can find the error line in the xorg log file, it finishes up:

Just some thoughts: is it possible that the radeon driver doesn't actually support the X1300 yet? Under Linux, the fglrx driver would of course work, but there's no chance to get that working under BSD. The radeonhd driver might work, but installing it will probably require some tinkering (or waiting for the next X.org version).

I cross posted to FreeBSD-Questions and someone there also suggested installing and trying radeonhd driver, so I'll give that a go.

Still not resolved this. I've resorted to using the vesa driver, with the panel reduced to around 70% or so, centre.

I was thinking about maybe cross posting to an xorg forum (if such a thing exists). Apart from my xorg.conf and my tech spec, how can I get more info? Which commands should I use?

I'm familiar with a lot of shell commands, but I could use a few pointers. Thanks.

Okay, sorry to keep banging on about this. Got some advice on an xorg forum. The suggestion is to do with compiling support with git(?)

Going to look into that. See what happens.

As a backup, could anyone tell me what NVidia support is currently like? I have a builtin nv chipset which I could use.
