i've been working (actually not much) on my own forum software as used at thinktankforums.com.

i just released the code for the site. if anyone has any interest in helping develop or giving some suggestions, please do. otherwise, i hope it is useful to you.

For example, Linux had at least two completely independent USB stacks before Linus Torvalds rejected them both and wrote a third one from scratch, after he found both existent Linux  stacks unsatisfactory.  (When pressed for an explanation as to why he selected the API he did, Torvalds stated: "because I wanted to."

i just found out google hosts projects with a svn server and all. so i'm using that. it's kinda cool:
