Topic: Negotiating intellectual property agreements

On my last job, I signed a vague agreement that I would not create software outside of work that is in the same area as my employer's software. I think that would all be a matter of interpretation and the employer could choose to claim ownership of anything I created outside of work.

How do you suggest forming an agreement with employers that is fair to them and allows you to also do programming (free software) outside of work that doesn't end up belonging to them?

Re: Negotiating intellectual property agreements

You should start with hiring a lawyer to translate the contract to English.

Trust me, I know what I'm doing.
