Topic: Sticking something between the BIOS and my power button

Because I have to disable ACPI for my ethernet card to work with BSDs, I don't have power management. That's okay; I pretty much use my laptop as a desktop replacement. Suspend is nice, but not really necessary.

However, also because I have to disable ACPI, pressing the power button results in an instant and unclean shutdown.

That is not so okay, since it means that one easy mistake can cause data loss.

Additionally, my laptop seems not to have an APM BIOS.

What I'm wondering is, is it possible to have some kind of "dummy power management" which does nothing other than alter the behavior of my power button? Something that intercepts the signal so the BIOS doesn't receive it and call an instant shutdown?
