Topic: How install NetBSD when FreeBSD (DesktopBSD) OR OpenBSD are installed

Hi all,

I'm French and my English is poor. If possible, answer me in French. Thanks.

the problem : when DesktopBSD or OpenBSD, I cannot install NetBSD because :
-cannot create / for NetBSD
-cannot create all partitions in the disklabel.
Is this incompatibility "hard", or write in the stone?
I would like install it with CD and network pkg_add (as OpenBSD) for GNOME or KDE.
Thanks,

ahlsner

PS : FreeBSD or OpenBSD appear as "/" par the installer. So, it cannot create the "/" for NetBSD and the disklabel is not complete.

Re: How install NetBSD when FreeBSD (DesktopBSD) OR OpenBSD are installed

Hi all,

I've tried to install successfully  "NetBSD 3.1", but my DesktopBSD is broken, does not start.
With NetBSD 4 or 5, sysinst halts because there are two "/" for it.
With NetBSD 3.1, the installation is complete (creating partition and disklabel), but sysinst brokes FreeBSD (I haven't tried for OpenBSD)
There a big problem for install NetBSD when OpenBSD, or FreeBSD is present

Re: How install NetBSD when FreeBSD (DesktopBSD) OR OpenBSD are installed

Hello ripskee,

Hello ripskee,

Thanks for informations and feedback.
actually, I try to install NBSD 5.0 by pkg_add + network for binaries packages, such gnome, firefox, and there is only a primary partition on (hd1,0) Unix (=wd1). Later, once NetBSD fully OK, I will try install OpenBSD or DesktopBSD for see the interactions/interdependencies between them.
When I wanted install NBSD, there are at these moments two primaries partitions : NetBSD and no formated by gparted.
with 2 prim. partitions, the disklabel into NetBSD is nont complete. After deleting the 2nd primary partition, the disklabel was complete.
For sysisnt, partiton before or after is the same thing : problem.
Goodbye

Re: How install NetBSD when FreeBSD (DesktopBSD) OR OpenBSD are installed

Hi Ahlsner,

I installed all the major BSDs on the same hard drive without any problem.  The trick is to use partition the disk using OpenBSD and also use OpenBSD boot code.
Make sure your partitions end exactly at cylinder boundaries.  Install OpenBSD first, then all others.  Do not install any other MBR or boot code.  Keep everything under the control of OpenBSD.  My two cents smile
